What I like about small business owners is that they are not afraid to take huge risks and lay it all on the line. But, I agree they do need a lot of help with their marketing. I think having them go the social media and email route is not only the least expensive but its also the most effective. Thanks for the stats!
With Facebook and Twitter being among the leaders of the Social networks, marketing as a small business is being transformed..
Respondents according to the Vertical Response survey appear to need some differentiation with the use of SE marketing and Social media Marketing

Just saw this: "Note: The following promotion has ended, but there is a new promotion starting from 2/21/09 to 2/28/09 at Restaurant.com. The new coupon code is DINE and gives you 80% off $25 gift certificates and also Dinner of the Month memberships . Enjoy! "
So you can buy $25 worth of gifts for $5. I think that works out to your point here, and your math can't be that far off..

Hey Diorex:

Who said it doesn't work for affiliate ? =)

I used this tactic as affiliate, and it works wonders.

And, as you've known, only small % of people would forget to ask for the rebate.

Diorex-

I've been following your posts on Tweeter as well as your blog and we've responded to each other a couple of times...

REBATES...very interesting topic. With the product I'm involved in now, the breakage is about 30% (70% never redeem), so it's quite a bit higher than yours was. I'm also considering offering an additional one on top of the company rebate as you did. Sounds promising, especially if they have to wait a month or more before redeeming.

So you were in the dish marketing biz? Yep, those chargebacks are a bitch. As a DIRECTV retailer my chargebacks were running about $30K-50K a month. But I was at 7-10 million a year in gross commissions so it's all relative.

Keep up the cool posts. I'm following your tweets (god I feel like a nerd saying that) but honestly - there is such a stream of GARBAGE and self-promotion - I guess I still don't get it yet either!

One of the gimmicks that I always liked was when a restaurant or store would give you a scratchoff ticket or envelope that may/may not have a prize in it and that only the manager could scratch/open on your next visit within a date range. Rules stipulated that if you opened it yourself before your next visit, the prize would be void (California Pizza Kitchen, for example, has this going on right now). This gets people back in the door as well creates some excitement (everyone loves a little lottery or gambling). I can't figure out a way to get this type of thing online without being overly hockie, but I figured I'd share since its a decent offline tactic :)
