All very great and valid points however here's what happends to me all the time and why I often end up back at ringtones, payday loans, mortgage and insurance. I run an offer and get 0 conversions. I go in and bid high just to see if it converts, get a nice 5% ctr on my ads and then drive a good amount of traffic to my offer I'm testing. Guess what I spend $200-300 testing and go absolutely no where not even a single conversion time and time again. I've tested upwards of 20 offers on PPC now and I can't seem to shake this. The other day for example I was messign with "girls gone wild" video's and 2k clicks later not a single sale. How is this even possible? You'd think at least 1 person rolled off the short bus and decided to buy the product but no. By the way this was all domain and brand bidding as well so these weren't longtail crap words. So I guess my question is not how do you find a niche but rather an offer that converts worth a crap?

Thoughtful post. I never considered that the root URL would have so much of an impact on CTR, but heck it should be obvious given it's 25% of the ad copy.

How do you normally test URLs? Do you pick just a few high volume KWs?

What kinds of digital products/services would you recommend looking into? Niche software (eg. PDF converters), eBooks, services (eg. dating)?

Thanks for provide quality information.

Cheers-
J

I've found that opening the phone book is one of the best places to find a profitable niche IMMEDIATELY. Great post Diorex. Any chance of linking to my blog:

On your point:

"A payout that is north of $10. You simply cannot scale nickel clicks and a $2 payout."

I couldn't agree more but in it's defence, everything I know about affiliate marketing came from "making these work". You have to work MUCH harder with a $2 payout and the razor thin margins force you to test and tweak down to the smallest thing. (I was not using ZIP or mail submits).

Once I moved on up the payout scale, things got much better and the slaving away really paid off.
