What math behind testing? I must be missing something. Aiming for high CTRs, calculating how much an increase in a particular statistic could improve profits. What else is there?

I'm loving that you're blogging more regularly. Excellent points, and exactly what I observed from trying to bring friends into this. I'd venture the same arguments are what prevent folks from successfully launching their own businesses.

The greatest chance I can see for the average person to succeed is to get well networked with people who know what is going on. Testing and figuring stuff out on their own will probably result in failure unless the person is willing to learn the ins and outs of the industry first.

I got lucky as well and hit it off on my second attempt. A bit of hand holding by friends at first, but it wasn't until I struck off and went really creative that I could do 10x-30x what my friends could show me.

I completely agree on this one.

Unless you get lucky and hit it big at first, most people do not have the perseverance or intense desire it takes to succeed.

It typically takes years for people who are at it hardcore to get it right. Imagine, for people who are only spending 1 hour a day...

Not a chance.

Any kind of entreprenurial venture will weed out almost all who enter just because of the sheer brutality of the market. That the web lowers the barriers to entry so a person can launch a legit business for a few bucks to a few grand on the higher end is both a pro and con for the average joe who meets the criteria you laid out.

I'm one of the few who believes barriers can be good things - good to see I'm not entirely alone on that one.
